Over the past ten years karaoke has exploded across the United States. Bars and karaoke themed establishments often host genre specific parties for patrons using state of the art karaoke machines. There are various styles and types of karaoke machines; some show a generic video in the background with the words of the song scrolling across the bottom and others are more advanced and play the actual video from the recording artist. In larger establishments projection screen karaoke displays are used but most moderately sized facilities will make use of the commercial machines with a standard television sized monitor.
In order to utilize a karaoke machine you need to have CD's or tapes that are loaded into the unit. Some companies make cassettes that are geared towards children and tweens and don't require the use of a karaoke machine, just a cassette player with speakers. You can opt to use a microphone but most kids are more than happy just sing with the music without having to compete with a lead singer. That is the whole premise of a karaoke CD, the main or lead vocals have been removed but in most cases the background harmonies remain to make it sound as authentic as possible.
When karaoke first became popular in the United States there weren't many songs to choose from. Top 40 Pop songs seemed to dominate the scene but as music promoters and mangers saw its popularity take off, they quickly saw the monetary possibilities. Now there are companies that do nothing more than create karaoke tracks that are compiled and sold as packaged sets. Music genres range from opera to rock, pop to country and include world music, soundtracks and inspirational themes.
Karaoke machines have come a long way too; the first units were bulky, cumbersome and didn't have a lot to offer potential customers. Now they are more user friendly and the large commercial units have mixing boards, light decks and visual enhancements that allow them to add the person singing into the video on the display. Video karaoke hasn't caught on in the United States yet but if the success of vocal karaoke is any indication, by 2010 it will be just as popular. One thing that some establishments are incorporating into their karaoke events is ongoing competitions, sort of like a smaller version of American Idol. Contestants are given songs a few weeks in advance to practice and then have to out-perform others to advance to another round. In this way, karaoke has helped launch careers of a handful of lucky people who were discovered by talent scouts.
Purchasing the karaoke CD's isn't an expensive venture. In most cases they cost the same as a regular CD (with the vocals removed) but you can buy some songs online and have them compiled to a CD. These are great for theme parties, weddings and other events and since you get to pick the songs you aren't going to have to spend time wading through tracks that you don't care for.
Karaoke is something that everyone in the family can join in on and it is a lot of fun. There are several companies that make educational versions of popular songs, consider it the Schoolhouse Rock of karaoke. It only take a minute or so to learn the more advanced all-in-one microphone units that are all the rage and as long as you can follow the words on the screen, you can have a lot of fun with karaoke.
After the initial investment of the karaoke machine and music, it is an expense-free form of entertainment. With more and more people cutting back on movies and concerts, karaoke offers unlimited amount of fun at home, church events, picnics, graduation parties and weddings.
